Dan Costa & Ivan Lins: Love Dance

posted in: Video | 0

— It is not every day I sit down to review a single track or video. I recall having done it previously when Conrado Paulino & Rosa Passos presented us with their rendition of “Eu Sei Que Vou Te Amar.” Now, please enjoy the latest partnership between two great pianists: Dan Costa and Ivan Lins. For regular MúsicaBrasileira.org readers, Dan Costa is a familiar name. He has previously been reviewed here (see Suíte Três Rios and Skyness). In the suite album, Costa pays homage to the diversity of Brazilian rhythms and assembles an A-list of Brazilian performers including Jaques MorelenbaumLeila Pinheiro, Teco Cardoso, and Marcos Suzano. In the follow-up release, Skyness, more original compositions are featured and performed with special guests that include Roberto Menescal, Teco Cardoso, Romero Lubambo, and Nelson Faria, among others. Stepping back from his original compositions, Dan Costa has just released a new single and video of his stellar collaboration with Ivan Lins. Together, in a Costa arrangement of Ivan Lins, Gilson Peranzzetta, and Paul Williams’ “Love Dance,” you have the composer singing along Costa on piano.

As it is in modern times, it all started with a single email from Costa to Lins. Costa approached Lins with a superb arrangement of “Love Dance” and invited Lins to sing it with Costa on piano. The energy between the two artists is vivid as you can see in the video below. The song is a Lins classic that has been recorded by some of the greatest performers in the world, including George Benson, Barbra Streisand, Carmen Mcrae, and Sarah Vaughn. When I asked Costa why he had picked that particular song, he said that the lyrics and music, with which he identifies, bring “a message of love for the world, especially in this critical moment.” In this beautifully arranged and performed love serenade, you will feel the joy and exuberance these two artists share face to face. Watch their expressions and feel the music. A classic song rises to a new level of greatness thanks to Costa’s first-rate arrangement and piano brilliance with Lins on vocals.
