Reinventing Themselves
— Way back in 2002, superstars Marisa Monte (vocals and acoustic guitar), Arnaldo Antunes (vocals) and Carlinhos Brown (percussion and vocals) joined forces and started their Tribalistas project. A surprising, original and spectacular album was the result of their enthusiast get-togethers. It seemed like a one-time event, but surprise surprise: 15 years later, in 2017, a new album shows up on the market.
It was in 2013 that Tribalistas had a small reunion. They recorded the song “Joga Arroz” to support marriage between same sexes. It was followed by a reunion in a studio in Salvador de Bahia in 2016. The three star musicians had a great time and composed some twenty songs during their meetings. Sometimes even three songs on one day! So it was clear: a new album was about to be born. Ten songs were chosen for the second album release of Tribalistas. Its predictable success was tempered by not too enthusiastic reviews in the Brazilian press. It’s true, the result is not as spectacular as the 2002 release. It’s more like going on where they left off, which, of course, isn’t bad at all. But the music isn’t as renovating as one might expect from these giants. The compositions carry a solid Tribalistas trademark. It doesn’t sounds like there’s a fifteen-year gap between the two albums. Even the accompanying musicians are the same: Dadi Carvalho on bass, various guitars and keyboards and Cézar Mendes on acoustic guitar. We also hear guitarist Pedro Baby and Pretinho da Serrinha on cavaquinho. Most surprising is the guest appearance by Maria do Carmo de Carvalho Rebelo de Andrade, or in short, Carminho, the fado singer from Portugal. She lends her beautiful voice on the closing “Os Peixinhos.” She’s also co-composer of “Tribalivre.” Carminho isn’t a stranger in this company. Marisa was on Carminho’s albums Canta Tom Jobim, singing “Estrada do Sol” (2016) and on Canto singing “Chuva No Mar” (2014).
It’s a joy to hear these three musical friends doing their thing again. You get the quality performances that you can expect from this trio. It shows they had fun doing the recordings. For the fans of Tribalistas, this is the perfect (but late) follow-up. Newcomers will be surprised by the special kind of music they hear. The band has reinvented themselves again, but there’s no reason to complain about that. Tribalistas is touring around in Brazil and this fall they’ll be in Europe.
