A Good Thing Worth Repeating
If listeners of Para Gershwin e Jobim did not think there was enough Jobim in that album, rejoice now. With Para Gershwin e Jobim – 2 Kites we get another good dose of Gershwin and plenty more of Jobim. With special appearances by Joana Adnet, Joyce and Paulo Jobim, Para Gershwin e Jobim – 2 Kites was once again masterminded by Mario Adnet (production, arrangements, direction). Other musicians who took part in this extensive work include Marcos Nimrichter (piano, accordion), Zeca Assumpção (acoustic bass), Hugo Pilger (cellos), Tutty Moreno and Jurim Moreira (drums), Cristiano Alves (clarinet), Rodrigo Campello (guitar), Vittor Santos (trombone), Zé Nogueira (soprano sax) and Paulo Guimarães (flutes).
From the creative medley in the opening track — “Rhapsody in Blue” and “Samba do Avião” — this album is non-stop thrilling. The Gershwin-flavored introduction of Jobim’s “Surfboard” repeats the surprise of the opening medley. Then Adnet pays tribute to the two masters in “Na Mesma Direção (Para Gershwin e Jobim).” As she had done previously with “Love Is Here to Stay” in Para Gershwin e Jobim, Joana Adnet brings back the innocence of her angelic voice in three solos: “But Not For Me,” “Someone to Watch Over Me” and “Valsa do Porto das Caixas.” The humorous lyrics of “Chansong” are performed here by Jobim’s own son, Paulo Jobim, in a duet with Mario Adnet. The inclusion of this tune here is more than appropriate. Jobim’s brief citation of Gershwin in the melody of “Chansong” is perfect. Another tailor-made re-recording for this album is “Desafinada.” Joyce and Mario Adnet’s interpretation hits high marks again, as does this entire album.
