A New High

CorrenteFábio Torres, Paulo Paulelli and Edu Ribeiro have enjoyed separate musical careers for some time. Now, joining their talents on Corrente, they reach a new high. Torres (São Paulo, 1971) is an excellent pianist who has performed with Vania Bastos, Toninho Horta, Ivan Lins and Rosa Passos. Paulelli (São Paulo, 1974), who also recorded with Rosa Passos, is a bassist who appears is some of the top Brazilian performers, including Ivan Lins, Hermeto Pascoal, Dominguinhos, Chico Buarque and João Donato among countless others. As for Ribeiro, he also gets credit for his work with Rosa Passos and other stellar names such as Johnny Alf, Chico Pinheiro, Sadao Watanabe, Randy Brecker, Dominguinhos and other world-renowned musicians. In Corrente, these outstanding musicians treat us to new and bold arrangements of Brazilian classics. They cover works from Moacir Santos, Pixinguinha, Severino Araújo, Tom Jobim and Jacob do Bandolim and still find room for original compositions. Their treatment to classics melodies such as “Lamento,” “Murmurando” and “Assanhado” is a rare display of daring arrangements without hurting the original numbers. The same goes to the Bossa Nova standards “Garota de Ipanema” and “Triste.” The latter features Vinícius Dorin’s alto sax solos. As for the original compositions by Torres and Paulelli, I call attention to “O Jardim,” a gorgeous ballad in which Torres’ piano solo could melt the ice caps.
