Adventure Music: 10 Years

Ten Shining Years

Adventure Music: 10 YearsIt is hard to imagine how fast time has flown. I was totally off guard when I realized that Adventure Music is celebrating ten years of great music. Some record labels make a name by focusing on one particular genre. For example, who can forget Windham Hill and the music genre it helped create? More particular to Brazilian music I recall Malandro Records. How badly I miss the albums Malandro released. You can find several of those albums reviewed here in MB. To help fill a void left when Malandro closed its doors, Adventure Music began focusing on the music of Latin America back in 2002. The very first six albums the label released were reviewed here.

Claudia Villela

Ten years later and very strong, Adventure Music has released a celebratory 3-CD retrospective of its amazing artist roster. Though a few non-Brazilian songs make part of this amazing collection, these albums are primarily focused on Brazilian music. For the uninitiated listener, 10 Years is a magnificent start-up package. Even in case you own all of these CDs,
Monday Michiru has accomplished a great feat with this compilation. I love playing these albums and being surprised all over again by the music I hear. It is as if I had never heard this music before. It is not easy to produce compilations that maintain an interest especially for collectors. 10 Years is not one of those. Even if you are familiar with all tracks, you will still find yourself rejoicing
in the music you hear. These are the best 3.5 hours of music you’ll get this year in one single package!

Moacir Santos

Where does one begin to highlight this music? The teasing opening track from Orquestra Popular de Câmara is the preamble to Moacir Santos’ iconic Ouro Negro 2001 album. Moacir is well represented here and reappears in four other tracks: “Se Você Disser Que Sim,” with vocal by Muíza Adnet, “Felipe,” “De Repente Estou Feliz” and “Agora Eu Sei.” From that first batch of six CDs, the choices could not have been better. For example, Claudia Villela and Ricardo Peixoto’s “Imã” is featured along Tom Lellis’ haunting vocal in “Canções e Momentos.” Other regular names in Adventure Music releases are Marco Amorim, Hamilton de Holanda, Jovino Santos Neto, Ricardo Silveira and Mario Adnet. The whole gang is all here.

It is also important to mention a recent focus in Adventure Music: its Piano Masters Series. With two volumes to date, Benjamin Taubkin and Philippe Baden Powell, this remarkable series promises other future Brazilian piano masters, such as Weber
Iago and Jovino Santos Neto.

Brazilian music has a strong ally in Adventure Music. These first 10 years were marked with solid releases and memorable recordings.
It has become a pattern that any new Brazilian releases from the label are more than mere satisfying products. A new album from Adventure Music carries a solid reputation from a label destined to bring discerning listeners some of the best in Brazilian music.
